Haiti - Education : The crucial importance of an education of quality in Haiti
Michaëlle Jean Special Representative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) for Haiti, who was attending a press conference Monday, on the partnerships to establish and strengthen with the philanthropic sector for the promotion of education for all, she insisted in her speech on the crucial importance that represents the access to an education of quality in Haiti, noting that many schools had been destroyed by the earthquake of January 2010 and that nearly a third of the population in Haiti has never had a chance to be educated.

She has vigorously protested against the notion of "resilience", often associated with the Haitian people, "as if the latter had the sole role on earth to endure the misfortune". She said that the National Pact for Education, established by the President René Préval before the earthquake of January 2010, to increase the number of children, began to bear fruit. "For Haiti, the promotion of education for all is a matter of life or death. Historically, this is the priority of Haitians, even since the time of the plantations" added Ms Michaelle Jean.

She concluded by wishing an investment in the competences of the Haitians and greater accountability from the companies, key elements of a "renaissance of Haiti".
