Haiti - 215th Flag : «It is not enough to glorify the exploits of our ancestors» dixit the Mayor of Saint-Marc 19/05/2018 09:00:13
Speech by Mayor Nicolas Dorvilus : "Civil and police authorities, Ladies and Gentlemen Constituent the Corps of Honor, Schoolchildren, students, University of Saint-Marc... It is not enough to commemorate, each year, the anniversary of the creation of the flag and the Congress of Archaia, It is not enough to glorify the exploits of our ancestors who forged this Nation, It's not enough to enjoy walking on the ruins of memories buried in a 215-year-old past. For the umpteenth time, we perform the glorious and proud parade. We remember the gesture of May 18, 1803 when the 'sans-culotte' and bare arms of Santo Domingo had pierced the magic of the union to forge this Nation. The first beginnings, the first gestations of our state-people clearly showed that our titans aimed at the end of the exploitation of the man by the man. Today, 215 years later, this moment is here to challenge us on the road already traveled, on the commitments already made by our ancestors. To live free or to die in dignity, such was the 'leitmotif' of our ancestors. This motivation incited fear, respect, the complicity of oppressed castes and security. At the moment we are commemorating the 215th anniversary of the creation of our flag, we suffer the horrors of fear, insecurity, intolerance, which break the impetus of solidarity that is the proverbial mark of the Haitian. In all this, the country is vegetating, values are crumbling. We must therefore learn some lessons from the symbolism of the flag and activate the ramp of progress. We must remember that since 1938, the Flag Day is linked to that of the University which are development incentives, so we must act. St. Marc has always been able to create history by initiating all the major changes that must be made in the country. Why not use this opportunity to send a clear signal to the bandits and detractors of the Nation ? This day must animate citizen mobilization for everyone, as follows :
We hope that the University will become the niche to orchestrate all these behaviors and propose positive role models for the future of our generation. Our ancestors made 1803, we have this glorious legacy of our fathers, together we exploit the fruits of this acquired so that every May 18 we can sing with pride 'For the Flag for the Fatherland; for the country for the ancestors.'"
