Haiti - Environment : Access to the Climate Fund, Haiti dream in green
The Ministry of the Environment (MDE), in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Haiti, organized last week at Hotel Karibe a two-day information workshop on access to Green Climate Fund (GCF). The main objective of this workshop was to inform public and private sector actors, financial institutions and the University of the opportunities offered by the GCF in terms of direct access to funding for to fight against global warming.

In his speech, Pierre Simon Georges, Minister of the Environment who opened this workshop drew attention to the fact that the fight against climate change is both a question of justice and a "sine qua non" condition of the fight against poverty "[...] that is why the Ministry is organizing to provide the country with a national program including investment priorities in mitigation and adaptation to climate change, actively involving sectors: public, private and national financial," concluded the Minister.

Martine Thérer, Deputy Representative of UNDP in Haiti reminded the importance of the GCF for a country like Haiti, which is very vulnerable to natural hazards. According to Martine Thérer, citing Haiti's proposal to COP 21 http://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-15387-haiti-environment-cop21-an-action-plan-of-over-25-billion-dollars-for-haiti.html , the country is requesting funding of more than $ 25 billion in mitigation and adaptation to deal with climate change and major natural hazards. According to James Cadet, the Climate Change Director of the Ministry "climate change exposes the whole of humanity to great threats: increased water stress, desertification, soil erosion, the amplification of extreme events, etc... the harmful effects of climate change on community livelihoods are no longer to be proven. That is why Haiti is getting better and better in line with the requirements of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, in order to strengthen Haiti's resilience and reduce climate risks."

Addressing climate change mitigation and adaptation priorities in Haiti, the agronomist-engineer, Associate Professor at the Institute of Science, Technology and Advanced Studies of Haiti (ISTEAH) since 2015 http://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-9072-haiti-notice-isteah-admission-in-educational-sciences.html Dr. Kenel Délusca, spoke about the ambitions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by using a larger share of renewable energy in the country's energy mix, better waste management and implementation of extensive reforestation programs. For adaptation, he mentioned the different sectors targeted by the Nationally Determined Contributions (CDN). To implement his ambitions and facilitate the adaptation of priority sectors, he spoke of the ambitious financial needs of Haiti that are estimated at billions of dollars.
