Haiti - Education : President Moïse officially launches the start of the school year 2018-2019
Monday at the Célie Lillavois National School (Street Capois), President Jovenel Moïse, accompanied by his wife Martine, in the presence of Deputy Kétel Jean-Philippe, President of the Education Committee in the Chamber of Deputies, resigning Ministers Pierre Josué Agénor Cadet (Education) Pierre Simon Georges (Environment), Reynaldo Brunet (Interior), Meniol Young Director General of the Ministry of Education, Mrs. Phanèse R. Laguerre Coordinator of the National Program of School Canteens (PNCS), Maria Luisa Fornara, UNICEF Representative in Haiti, other government officials and civil service executives and hundreds of schoolchildren, launched the 2018-2019 Back to School theme on "An Inclusive School for a solidarity Nation".

Focusing on the scope of the theme chosen this year, Cadet stressed that inclusion will be at the center of his concerns and actions this year. He wants to see, he says, "all Haitian children benefit from one and only education, overcoming inequalities of birth or origin and offering everyone the opportunity to access the same scientific, historical and moral education, break the language barrier and create the necessary seating for all children who are still outside the system."

In his speech, the Head of State recalled that the country needed an inclusive Government and an inclusive and socially inclusive society. In order to achieve a better society in 25 years, President Moïse insists that the State provide young schoolchildren today with the necessary guidance. "These children, once trained, will not need sponsors to enter the university," adding "with the Office of Management and Human Resources, we allow young technicians to enter Public Administration on competitions, so that they have the same opportunities [...] We must succeed in universal access to school for all our children [...] I wish a successful 2018-2019 school year to all Haitian students as well as teachers. I take this opportunity to congratulate the parents for their sense of sacrifice and the efforts made to allow their offspring to go to school."

In the perspective of this Republican school open to all, especially children with special needs, the Minister stressed that actions will be undertaken to facilitate access and provide adequate conditions for teaching and learning and thus promote more social justice and more national solidarity. He took the time to greet the parents for all the sacrifices made for the education of their child, stressing that it was the best investment in the future. He also asked students to take their studies seriously because it is the best way, he says, to take charge and become a responsible citizen, useful to society.

Following the ceremony, President Moïse, accompanied by his wife, the ministerial delegation and the UNICEF representative, distributed school kits and uniforms to students in the basic class of Célie Lilavois schools and the Republic of Brazil. Accompanied by Mrs Phanèse R. Laguerre he also participated in the school canteen where the children had their first hot meal of the school year in a friendly atmosphere.

Note that beyond the political enthusiasm, students were few Monday in the streets of the capital and provincial cities for this new back to school. In provincial towns including Petit-Goâve, Les Cayes, Port-de-Paix, parents sought help from the authorities. The difficult economic situation seems to be the main cause of the reported rate of high absence in public and private schools, some of which have not given courses, due to a sufficient number of pupils.
