Haiti - Health : Neonatal training seminar
Some health specialists, coming from the 10 main hospitals of Port-au-Prince, where the majority of births occur , received training on the care and management of newborns and the use of new equipment, during a course organized by the Latin American Centre for Perinatology (CLAP) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (PAHO / WHO) in Port-au-Prince.

During the seminar, the most critical aspects of childcare, reception and resuscitation of the newborn in the delivery room, hand washing, prevention of nosocomial infections and early breastfeeding were discussed. Participants were also trained in the use of perinatal technologies and teaching materials to reproduce this seminar in other hospitals. Other seminars on the care of the newborn are planned across the country,

"We are planning to expand training to improve basic, prenatal, delivery, and newborn care," noted Pablo Durán, CLAP advisor on perinatal health. The planning process with involve other organizations and other work areas of PAHO.

The course, was attended by 22 participants, including nurses, nurse-midwives, pediatricians, and general practitioners. The training was provided by neonatologists Javier Alejandro, Dinerstein Meritano et Lanusse Candelaria degree in nursing. The participants after receiving education had to put into practice these new knowledge to the hospital, in the care of newborns, with the help of instructors.
