Haiti - Migration : 3 major host countries for Haitians rejected the UN Global Compact
3 important host countries for Haitians (USA, Dominican Republic and Chile) have rejected the Global Compact for safe, orderly and regular migration of the United Nations and have considerably strengthened their measures to slow down or prevent illegal migration on their territory.

Recall that this pact was approved in Assembly without vote or signature on December 10 in Marrakech (Morocco) in front of some 150 countries out of 193 and will be definitively ratified by a vote on December 19 at the UN. However, in the absence of official list it is not possible to know the names of countries present and absent in Marrakech. Note that among others : the United States, Hungary, Australia, Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic, Israel, Switzerland, Slovenia, Denmark, Slovakia, Estonia, Bulgaria, Dominican Republic https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-26316-haiti-flash-the-dominican-republic-refuses-to-sign-the-global-compact-for-migration.html and Chile rejected this Covenant.

In addition, on Sunday, Miguel Vargas Maldonado, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic announced that the Dominican Government will abstain in the next vote on the adoption of another Global Compact, this time concerning the refugees. Monday, December 17th at the plenary session of the 73rd General Assembly of the United Nations in New York.

While acknowledging "the humanitarian character of the Refugee Pact" in the light of its commitments under its own legislation and the international conventions that the Dominican State has signed and ratified, it stresses that some of the principles contained in the Covenant have support on two international instruments to which the Dominican Republic is not a party: the Convention on the Status of Stateless Persons of 1954 (never signed) and the Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness 1961 (signed on 5 December 1961 but never ratified).

Vargas recalled that only the Dominican State can grant refugee status, stressing that the pact provides a division of burden and responsibility among the UN Member States, which could be contrary to the national interest and affect capacity of the Dominican Republic, which could be faced with a considerable number of people who may be declared refugees under the new international statute.
