Haiti - Climate : The USA concerned about the consequences of a major hurricane in Haiti
The United States are concerned about the consequences of the possible passage of a major hurricane in Haiti, due to the slow pace of reconstruction after the earthquake of January 2010. Over one million people still live in makeshift shelters, with 650.000 under tents in camps, said Tuesday, Garry Reid, Assistant Secretary to the Defence for Special Operations at a hearing of the subcommittee for new threats, of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee.

The Assistant Secretary stated that Haiti was not able to cope with the arrival of a major hurricane. Recalling that Haiti had been very lucky during the hurricane seasons 2010, when no major hurricane had hit the country.

Garry Reid shared his concerns, before the contents of the last report of the meteorologists at the University of Colorado, who believe that in 2011 "there will be about 9 hurricanes (average is 5.9), whose 5 major (Category 3-4-5) hurricanes (average is 2.3) and 10 major hurricane days (average is 5.0), with a probability of 61%, (compared to an average of 42% in the last century) that at least one major hurricane (category 3-4-5) follows the route of the Caribbean (10-20 ° N, 60-88 ° W )..."

Garry Reid emphasized on the necessity to be attentive to the needs of Haiti to ensure that the U.S. is able to react, in case of need.
