Haiti - Earthquake : "Unfortunately we expect other earthquakes"
18/04/2011 17:38:10

Haiti - Earthquake :
Mr. Eric Calais, a seismologist at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), presented to the press this afternoon, plans to reduce the vulnerability of Haiti face the seismic threats which the country is confronted. These plans must be implemented together with the Haitian Government," said Mr. Calais.

"When an earthquake has occurred somewhere, we know that in the future, another earthquake will occur in the same place," said the professor of geophysics at Purdue University during a press conference Held at United Nations Headquarters in New York. Mr. Calais, in this regard cited the earthquakes that struck Port-au-Prince in 1751, 1770 and January 12, 2010.

This last earthquake was therefore "not a surprise," he said, and "unfortunately we expect other earthquakes [...] the good news is that now we know what to do", added the seismologist .

Mr. Calais, which has the task, for UNDP, to assess seismic hazards and develop a strategy to reduce the impact of future earthquakes, has emphasized on the prevention of risks related to these phenomena.

A new prevention plan has been launched at the end of March to mitigate the impact of earthquakes in areas that are particularly vulnerable, including improving the resilience of infrastructure works and by reducing the risks for the population of poor-quality housing, said Mr. Éric Calais.

The establishment of predictive emergency plans will be conducted in consultation with the mayors and associations of communities at risk. School buildings, hospitals and other public buildings will be the first works to be evaluated to determine how to strengthen their structure.

UNDP and local authorities will provide training in techniques of aseismic buildings to architects, engineers and masons in Haiti, said the expert from the UNDP. The United Nations Programme for Development and local authorities will also launch awareness programs to educate Haitians on practical measures to minimize the impact of seismic threats on their lives," said Calais.

UNDP has delivered to the Government of Haiti a map of seismic hotspots in Port-au-Prince. This map shows the areas likely seismic shaking and is a vital tool for the reconstruction of Port-au-Prince.

Thus, architects and engineers will use the information on the different soil types on which is built the city to determine what types of plans are safer for the buildings and infrastructure of Port - au-Prince and determine the quantity and the quality of the materials that they need to use.

Haitian authorities, the private sector and residents of the city will also use this tool to build more resilient structures and to quantify the costs, which will vary depending on the stability of soils found in each area of Port-au-Prince and its surroundings.

An improved version and more detailed map of seismic zones should be completed by mid-2012, said Mr. Eric Calais.
