Haiti - Environment : $10 Million in aid from Germany
The 4th Annual Conference of the Caribbean Challenge Initiative (CCI) and of Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF) was held in Antiqua and Barbuda provided Haiti with $10 million in funding from the German Ministry of Cooperation and Development (KFW), with a view to strengthening or feeding the Haitian Trust Fund. The interest on this amount will be used to fund environmental services and will be deposited in an account opened in the name of Haiti at the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF) counter.

In this perspective, Joseph Emmanuel Philippe Director of Cabinet of the Minister of Environment Jouthe Joseph that he represented at this Conference, reiterated the commitment of the Haitian State through the Ministry, Environment to promote management plans of protected areas whose development has been validated by stakeholders. It should be noted that the management plan of the Three Bays National Park https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-21297-haiti-environmentpresentation-of-the-management-plan-of-the-three-bays-national-park.html prepared with the support of the CBF, will be submitted to the Minister for approval for publication.

On the sidelines of this conference, Haiti received a plaque of honor alongside five other countries that achieved the 2020 goal of the CCI; that of devoting at least 20% of the marine territory to the protection of marine and coastal biodiversity. Indeed, today Haiti has more than 25% of its marine and coastal area dedicated to conservation. The MOE through the ANAP and jointly with the sectoral partners must now combine their efforts to make the management of declared protected areas effective.

Learn more about the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF) :
The CBF is a financial mechanism created in 2012 at the initiative of the countries of the region. It aims to support the Caribbean countries in the preservation of marine and terrestrial biodiversity through trust funds for conservation at the national level. Thanks to the efforts of the Ministry of the Environment accompanied by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), UN Environment, Cooperation Switzerland, the German International Cooperation Agency for Development (GIZ) and the Audubon Haiti Society, the Haitian Fund for Biodiversity (FHB) was established in 2018. Note that Haiti has been a member of the CBF since 2016.
