Haiti - USA : Sen. Patrick Leahy - Visas and permanent status of Haitians officials
In a letter from Vermont Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy, addressed to the Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the Senator speaks of the results of parliamentary elections in Haiti.

The Senator explains that he was in Haiti recently he heard many people remark that the Haitian people deserve a government that cares more about the people than itself. He could not agree more. Adding that "if the United States is to effectively help Haiti rebuild, we need confidence that the Haitian government has the trust and support of its people."

He stressed that « the Provisional Electoral Council's unexplained reversal of preliminary results in 18 parliamentary races is alarming", and that "Haiti's future depends on a Parliament that is recognized as legitimate ".

Senator Leahy added that « given the support the United States has provided to the government and people of Haiti in this election and the failure to promptly remedy this apparent fraud, I am writing to urge the Department to take appropriate steps to convey our concern, including assessing the visa suitability and the lawful permanent status in the United States of Haitians officials who may be involved in election fraud", adding "It is critical that the outcome of the electoral process is recognized as free and fair by the international community and, most importantly, by the Haitian people."

Note that already on December 10, 2010 the Senator Leahy made know that the U.S. should support the right of the Haitian people to "choose their leaders freely and fairly" in the electoral process to obtain a "legitimate government respected by the Haitian people and recognized by the international community", adding that "by suspending direct aid to the central government and visas for top officials and their immediate family members, the United States would be sending that message" and this until necessary steps are taken to ensure a fair and democratic outcome to the elections held on November 28, 2010.

Then on January 22, 2011 Philip Crowley, the spokesman for the State Department, had declared "We have taken action against a number of Haitian citizens, and this is something that we will continue to evaluate [...] and to the extent that there are individuals who are connected with episodes of violence or corruption. We will not hesitate to take"
