Haiti - BRH : Launch of the National Plan of Financial Education 26/06/2020 10:31:16 Spanning 5 years (2020-2025), this Plan intends to encourage individuals and families to better develop their sense of savings and to arouse in them interest in investment through better knowledge and adequate use of financial products and services. It emphasizes financial education in the school system, entrepreneurs and smallholder farmers and rural people, vulnerable populations, migrants and their families, not to mention all active users of the financial system in general. Aligning with the National Strategy for Financial Inclusion (SNIF) whose national steering committee was installed on June 24, this Plan revolves around 6 main priority axes :
The Ministry of National Education will play a major role in implementing the Plan by training young people in the school environment and those outside the school environment (non-formal education). Speaking during the launching ceremony, Pierre Josué Agénor Cadet the Minister of Education, believes that this Public Policy Plan is a sign of modern times which Haiti cannot escape in this global village marked by the globalization of markets and the the need to make informed choices to help consumers and young people manage their finances. For Minister Cadet, by teaching our young people how to anticipate and adopt good decisions in managing their finances, how to take risks and seize investment opportunities, we are offering them a new, more reassuring path in planning their lives. This will make it easier for them to turn knowledge into capital and contribute to the emergence of a knowledge-based economy. Cadet reminded that "[...] research shows that an educated people in general and more specifically financially educated will make more informed choices in terms of consumption and preservation of acquired goods, in terms of savings and increases in their income, but also in terms of procreation and the time needed to start a family." He also took the opportunity to greet other partners such as Aflatoun, a Dutch NGO present in more than 100 countries which focuses on educating children about their rights and responsibilities and managing financial resources through social and financial education. Within the framework of the PNEF, Aflatoun will contribute to the training of teachers, bring educational materials, including textbooks for financial education. For Jean Baden Dubois, Governor of the BRH, this Plan is the fruit of a year of collaboration between different actors all working for the improvement of financial inclusion in Haiti. He took the opportunity to salute other international institutions that have worked to complete this process such as the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AIF) and the Center for Research for International Development (IDRC).
