Haiti - Reconstruction : ECOSOC in Haiti, amplifying the sustainable development in Haiti
A delegation of the Consultative Group of Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations composed of eleven members, led by the Deputy Permanent Representative of Canada to the United Nations, Mr. Gilles RIVARD, and which includes among others the Deputy Permanent Representative of Haiti to the United Nations, Mr. Jean Wesley Cazeau and representatives of other countries, including the United States, Brazil, Chile, France, Spain and the Bahamas, is visiting Haiti from June 15 to 19, the purpose of this visit is to collect data from Haitian officials, international partners and representatives of civil society that will be used in the formulation of recommendations that could amplifying the sustainable development in Haiti and a better coordination of international humanitarian assistance.

Friday the delegation met members of the members of the government team of President Michel Martelly to inquire about their vision of long-term development of the country and tools they will use to achieve it. Thursday, the delegates of the ECOSOC have also made ​​a field visit to Léogâne, they attended the presentation of a project to collect debris made by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). They also visited the landfill sites and of recycling of waste including Caira, Mapou, Dampou, Flon et Macombe. They also expressed their support to the municipal and local authorities.

Their visit to Haiti is also intended to see how international aid is used in the field and to evaluate strategies for capacity building of the Haitian government, while encouraging support by national authorities of the reconstruction and development projects, particularly in the areas of education and health.

At the end of their visit the mission of the ECOSOC will make recommendations regarding the establishment of a sustainable development strategy in Haiti, including the strengthening of the plan of reconstruction and stabilization. Recommendations will also be on ways to ensure the consistency of international aid to Haiti, which must also take into account of the priorities identified in the Action plan for national recovery and development of Haiti.
