Haiti - Agriculture : Haiti participates in the 36th FAO regional session on food security
On Monday, Prime Minister Joseph Jouthe participated by video conference on the first day of the 36th regional session of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

As part of this Regional Conference, the FAO (October 19 to 21, 2020) chaired by Nicaragua, the representatives of the 33 member countries have defined (by videoconference due to Covid-19), three main priorities which will be discussed at length during the three days of discussions and reflections:

1- Transform food systems so that everyone can have access to healthy food;
2 - Move hand in hand towards prosperous and inclusive rural societies;
3 - Build a sustainable and resilient agriculture in the face of climate change.

Julio Berdegué, FAO Regional Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean, in his opening remarks highlighted the opportunity offered by the 36th Regional Conference to support countries in the promotion and transformation of their food systems, in particular agriculture, fishing, livestock and forestry, reviewing the situation in Haiti, he explained "With the Parliamentary Front against Hunger in Haiti, FAO assisted the Haitian Government in the preparation of the proposal for school feeding law; in the development of seed policy; the national sovereignty, food security and nutrition policy and strategy in Haiti and the climate change adaptation plan.

Concluding, the program that we are presenting during these 3 days has been prepared in consultation with the Governments of FAO Member States, a hundred experts, civil society, the scientific and academic world, and the private sector".

Prime Minister Joseph Jouthe accompanied by Ministers Patrix Sévère (Agriculture) and Abner Septembre, (Environment) who represents Haiti recommended that FAO define new approaches and strategies aimed at helping countries in the region to be more resilient in the face of crises "FAO must always listen to States, and its interventions must be aligned with national policies and strategies. States must continue to be privileged partners of FAO. Institutional support and support for public policies must be strengthened. This strengthening, to be effective, requires additional resources at the regional level through the Technical Cooperation Program in order to allow the mobilization of resources to meet the growing needs of States."

During these three days, FAO wishes to support the representatives of the Governments of the 33 member countries in the search for concrete, resilient and sustainable solutions with a view to : the eradication of hunger which affects 47 million people in the region, obesity and overweight, which affects 262 million adults and 4 million children; and sustained support for the 51% of the regional population who suffer from one or more forms of malnutrition.
