Haiti - Reconstruction : The UNASUR spent nearly $70 million for Haiti
South American countries spent 66.2 million dollars in aid programs in Haiti on the $100 million promised, has indicated the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR). This institution which is based in Quito [capital of Ecuador], includes Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, the Uruguay and Venezuela.

Of this amount, the governments have paid $60 million directly to Haiti or through multilateral organizations like the World Bank and the InterAmerican Development Bank (IDB). The rest was sent by the Secretariat of the UNASUR, that maintains food security projects (1) housing (2) and legal aid (3), according to Rodolfo Mattarollo, Special Representative of the UNASUR for Haiti.

Maria Emma Mejia, Secretary General of UNASUR, said she will soon propose to the member countries, the perspectives of future cooperation with Haiti and that she is currently waiting, indications from the new Haitian government.

(1) The UNASUR manages in Haiti, the project "Pro Huerta" which provides the technology and ensures the training to the farmers, to improve the diet of 15,000 families, with an investment of USD$3 million.

(2) The "A roof for my country", in collaboration with the Chilean Foundation of the same name, which aims to build 854 houses, a clinic and a school at a cost USD$1.8 million.

(3) The last program put in place [USD$1.4 million], provides legal assistance to the Haitians prisoners without financial resources.
