Haiti - Agriculture : African swine fever, the Government is preparing
Thursday, September 9, 2021, Prime Minister ai, Ariel Henry met members of the Interministerial Commission (Task-force) responsible for working on the contingency plan and the strategies to be deployed to preserve pig farming in Haiti against African swine fever.

This meeting wanted to assess the different steps already taken in terms of preventive actions, detection of the viral strain in the different regions of the country, particularly in border areas.

It was also to review the actions that must be taken to eradicate African swine fever, if positive cases of African swine fever are declared in the national territory.

A progress report on the activities already undertaken in the framework of the preparation and prevention of African swine fever in the country, for the period from July to September 2021, was submitted to the Head of Government. An approach aimed at mobilizing all the necessary resources in order to intensify surveillance in the territory. Administrative, preventive and technical measures have been adopted by the Ministry of Agriculture, the Health Protection Unit and the Task Force.

These measures aim, among other things, to strengthen epidemiological surveillance at border posts, ports and airports, to consolidate the biosecurity of pig farming units in the country, to carry out information and awareness campaigns for the population and breeders around the disease; to develop a legal framework; to proceed with the strict application of the contingency plan for insured care; to have an emergency fund; to constitute the main recommendations of the Commission to the Head of Government.

Aware of the magnitude of the threat to the pig farming sector and the enormous economic losses that this can entail, the Prime Minister promised to take all measures to provide the necessary responses until the end of the year. eradication of African swine fever should it be declared in Haiti.
