In a press note, the Presidency condemns the acts of vandalism and of profanation perpetrated on the night of Saturday, August 6, 2011 at the Cathedral of Cap-Haitien.

It is recalled that the tolerance and the freedom of conscience are the basic foundations of a secular state and Republicans. Any attempt to undermine these principles is a serious threat against the rule of law and deserves to be treated rigorously.

In that clear instructions were passed to police and judicial authorities to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

The President took the opportunity to transmit its sympathies to the Apostolic Nuncio, the Catholic clergy, especially to the Archbishop of Cap-Haitien, Bishop Louis Kebreau, and to all Catholic Christians troubled by these actions.

Freedom of worship is recognized by the Haitian Constitution and remains one of the foundations of republican values shared by the Haitian people. In this sense, and according to prescribed of the constitution of 1987, the State, guarantor of the freedom of religion and worship, committed once again to guarantee to everyone the right to live freely its religious faith.
