Haiti - Economy : Smuggling has intensified since the closure of the Haitian border 30/10/2023 09:50:42
Smuggling has intensified since the closure of the Haitian border due to civil society opposition to the importation of Dominican products https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-40752-haiti-flash-haiti-keeps-its-door-closed-the-dominican-government-will-not-give-in.html ....
Smugglers no longer venture into border posts where PoliFront police officers intercept the goods and burn them...
Smugglers have concentrated their actions on binational rivers. They enter Dominican territory and return to Haiti via Lake Azuei or other rivers. Numerous cases have been reported in the municipalities of Ferrier and Capotille in particular.
Through the lake, smugglers can reach several municipalities. The Protected Area Surveillance Brigade (BSAP) which controls the rivers and the lake does not have adequate equipment to arrest smugglers.
