Haiti - Economy : Merchants and transporters call for the reopening of the Haitian border
During a press conference at the beginning of the week in the customs premises in Ouanaminthe, representatives of associations of traders and industrialists and leaders of the Union of Drivers and Owners of Ouanaminthe (SCPO) asked the departmental authorities for the reopening of the Haitian border.

Estimé St Juste president of the SCPO, Ajax Guillaumétrie member of an Association of traders and industrialists and Yves Robert Narcisse representative of Cap Shipping have all taken a position for the reopening of the border on the Haiti side "If this closure persists, it could cause the loss of more than 25,000 jobs at the Caracol Industrial Park due to drops in orders, the closure of the Haitian border preventing companies from receiving the intrans necessary to honor their contracts," declared Estimé St Juste , President of the SCPO.

Ajax Guillaumétrie, on behalf of traders, finds this reopening necessary in order to reduce the phenomenon of smuggling which is becoming widespread. He announces the resumption of discussions with the departmental authorities in order to find a concerted agreement, which would allow the population to obtain supplies as the holiday season approaches... He specifies that this request in no way affects the continuation of the work construction of the irrigation canal with water intake on the Massacre River.

The border closure on the Haitian side has serious economic consequences on the transport of goods and public transport as well as on formal and informal trade in the North-East department as the end-of-year festivities approach of the end of year…

While awaiting a decision, many carriers operating the Dominican Republic / Haiti link are requesting a 5-day truce to recover their trucks stuck in neighboring territory. These are more than 230 heavy-duty trucks which are now blocked due to the closure of the border gate on the Haitian side. The President of the Transporters Union indicates that the Dominican daily costs are close to 100 US dollars per truck…
