Haiti - Social : Nearly 200,000 Haitians returned to Haiti for the holiday season
The voluntary exodus of Haitians living in the Dominican Republic and returning to Haiti to spend the Christmas and New Year festivities with their families has accelerated in recent days, with a total estimated at nearly 200,000 voluntary departures to Haiti according to data from the Specialized Land Border Security Corps (CESFront)...

From December 20 to today, thousands of Haitians have arrived by bus in the province of Dajabón to cross the border to their country of origin to reunite with their loved ones. Every day, entire buses dump hundreds of Haitians loaded with packages and luggage. Some cross the border bridge on foot with their suitcases or pay 3-wheel motorcycle drivers to transport their luggage...

Faced with this influx, CESFront soldiers are vigilant and search luggage to ensure that illegal products do not cross the border into Haiti, such as plantains and rice, the export of which is temporarily prohibited https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-41303-icihaiti-contraband-seizure-of-rice-and-bananas-destined-for-haiti.html

This phenomenon is observed every year and these Haitians who leave for their country return to the Dominican Republic from January. However, many return illegally using smugglers whom they pay between 4,000 and 10,000 pesos to facilitate their return to Dominican territory.
