Haiti - FLASH : Update on the situation in Haiti
Saturday March 2nd, 2024, Port-au-Prince experienced moments of extreme violence with intense armed clashes between gangs and law enforcement. At least 10 people were killed (partial toll) during the assault on the National Penitentiary in Port-au-Prince where ± 4,000 inmates were incarcerated https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-41793-haiti-flash-the-national-penitentiary-stormed-many-prisoners-escape-chaos-in-the-capital-video.html

Aside from escapees and attackers, prison officers speak of the deaths of several inmates in the prison, the circumstances of which have not yet been clarified.

This assault by the bandits aimed to free their accomplices, dangerous criminals and gang leaders, before other detainees took advantage of the opportunity to escape.

Furthermore, at the same time, the Croix des Bouquets prison, 1,450 prisoners, was also attacked in the evening, freeing a large number of prisoners.

In the street, information suggests that the police seem to be regaining control of the situation...

Many figures are circulating on the number of escaped prisoners, however, no official count from the Directorate of Prison Administration (DAP) has been communicated to know the real extent of the escapes, leaving everyone to their own speculations... What we can only say from consistent sources is that the number of escapees would be very high.

According to prison staff: Colombians accused in the assassination of President Moïse; the lawyer Robinson Pierre Louis, the former President of the Chamber of Deputies Cholzer Chancy, Joseph Félix Badio, Frantz Aby Larco and the former Minister Limond Toussaint among others, did not escape and were transferred Sunday afternoon to other detention centers.

That same day in the Province, the Cabaret Police Station was set on fire by armed men.

In Cap-Haitian, tension is rising, barricades of burning tires have been erected in several streets of the Christophian city.

The airlines American Airlines (AA) and Jet Blue canceled their flights this Monday to Port-au-Prince.

The perimeter around the Pétion-ville police station has been closed to traffic.

The Ministry of Communication in a note writes "[...] The Government of the Republic salutes the courage of the Haitian police officers who tried to repel the assault of criminal gangs against the National Penitentiary and the Croix des Bouquets prison on the night of March 2nd to 3rd passed.

Our police officers, on the scene of several operations facing the rampages of heavily armed criminals wanting at all costs to free people incarcerated, particularly for kidnapping, murder and other offenses, not hesitating to execute civilians, set fires and loot public and private property, thanks to various complicities, did not succeed in preventing the bandits from bringing out a large number of prisoners.

These assaults on prison centers (National Penitentiary and Croix-des-Bouquets Prison) left several prisoners and Prison Administration staff injured.

The Government thanks the population for their calm, despite the very difficult times, asks them to be careful and to continue to support the National Police who will do everything possible to track down fleeing prisoners, arrest those responsible for these criminal acts and their accomplices for a return to public order."
