Haiti - Education : Update on the free education program
A statement from the press office of the Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training (MENFP) states that "The free education program, launched at the initiative of the Presidency, despite some difficulties registered in the departments, follows its normal course," noting that steps have been taken to find solutions to the problems encountered and ensure the success of the program.

MENFP indicates that the missions are deployed across the country to oversee and monitor the progress of the program, noting that 1.389 schools, 295,000 students and nearly 8.000 teachers already benefit from school feeding program. Measures have also been adopted the continuation of the distribution of school kits with the support of Unicef.

The Ministry also informs that the process of transfer of funds to the basic public institutions, whose annual tuition fees were abolished for 490.000 students, is underway and the first payment was made two weeks ago, adding that the process continues, "the departmental directorates of education are in the process of issuing checks to the public schools who now have an account at the Banque Nationale de Crédit..."

Concerning the 142.000 who had never attended school, the MENFP informs that the lists of students and host institutions, are being processed and that the contracts between the MENFP and these private schools are being of signature.

"For the 120,000 children in the first years of basic education in the departments of West and Artibonite, contracts are being signed with the private schools for the first payment of the subsidy."

Concerning the special measure of support for 50,000 children from disadvantaged areas of the West, the Ministry of Education announces the imminent signing of contracts to make the first payments. To this end, the MENFP asks to the Directors of the institutions concerned by these children to get in touch quickly with the Departmental Direction of the West (DDO).
