Haiti - Politic : Haiti Assumes Chair of OAS Permanent Council
The Permanent Representative of Haiti to the Organization of American States (OAS), Ambassador Duly Brutus, yesterday assumed for the next three months the Chair of the OAS Permanent Council, taking over from the Permanent Representative of Guyana, Ambassador Bayney Karran.

The Statute of the Permanent Council establishes that the Chair is to be held successively by each of the Permanent Representatives, in alphabetical order as determined by each country’s name in Spanish, and the Vice Chair in the same manner, following reverse alphabetical order. Both positions have a term of three months.

Ambassador Brutus highlighted the work of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and the importance of the Inter-American Democratic Charter. "I believe that we share the common interest of working together so that a culture of democracy takes root in the continent [...] now we have a region where people are free to decide for themselves their own policies, and that is thanks to democracy [...] Today we can say that democracy has triumphed, though it is a permanent struggle with no end [...] Nevertheless, we face other challenges at the regional level, notably the challenge of development. We live in a global context dominated by the globalization of the economy, with the countries of the Caribbean not having the strength or population necessary to engage enough in this struggle, and therefore we must reflect on the best way to help our countries advance in their development"

Laurent Lamothe, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Haiti, who wants to increase the bilateral meetings between the Head of State and all its counterparts in the countries of the OAS, has reminded to the Ambassador of Haiti, the importance of continue to highlight the new momentum generated by the Ministry as part of its diplomacy of business and to insist on the fact that Haiti is open to international investment, especially to the investment of its allies of the OAS.

The Haitian Minister of Foreign Affairs, took advantage of the accession of Haiti as President of the Permanent Council of the OAS to emphasize on the Government's desire to participate to the global governance, and bring changes in the functioning of some of these international institutions.

The President of the Republic, Michel Martelly will be called, during the presidency of Haiti to the OAS Permanent Council, to speak during a protocol session in March. For his part, the Chancellor Lamothe will meet with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the OAS and the representatives of Parliaments at the Summit of Heads of States of America to be held on April 14-15 in Cartagena (Colombia).

Several countries that have the status of permanent observer to the OAS, has warmly welcomed the accession of Haiti to the Presidency of the Permanent Council of the OAS.
