Haiti - Politic : Michaëlle Jean in Haiti for 7 days
The Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, UNESCO Special Envoy, will again be in Haiti from today for a seven-day mission to participate to the commemorations of January 12, 2010.

Sign that indeed, the things are moving in Haiti and that the hope has all the reasons to inhabit its population, Michaëlle Jean will participate, the the day of the commemoration of second anniversary of the earthquake, to the inauguration of campus Henry Christophe of the State University of Haiti, located in Limonade, in the north of the country. The event will be held under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Haiti, His Excellency Michel Joseph Martelly, and the President of the Dominican Republic, His Excellency Leonel Fernández. The campus, born of the insular solidarity , was offered by the Dominican government in the aftermath of January 12 that destroyed or severely damaged most of the buildings of the Haitian public university. Its establishment outside the metropolitan area of ​​Port-au-Prince will contribute to the decentralization of higher education system.

"Investing in education, training, research, higher education is fundamental for a new social pact, for the rebuilding of Haiti on solid and sustainable bases, added Mrs. Jean. The campus also reflects the fraternal ties to cultivate between the two republics on the island of Quisqueya and gives the example of what can be achieved through cooperation between Southern countries, faced with similar challenges, therefore also able to share their solutions."

The Special Envoy will also participate, on January 11, to an important meeting on the development of Haiti's National History Park (Parc national historique d'Haïti) which houses historical monuments of great value, including the Citadelle Henry, the Palais Sans Souci, the fortifications of Ramiers, inscribed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO in 1982. Invited by Prime Minister Garry Conille, the meeting will bring together Ministers of Culture and Tourism, also the Secretary of State for Heritage, he director of the Institute for the Protection of National Heritage (ISPAN) and representatives of UNESCO. Tourism is a key sector for economic development of Haiti, as in the rest of the region. Haiti wants to develop ecotourism and cultural tourism, which are among the sectors experiencing the fastest growth internationally. UNESCO, through the sustainable tourism program of the World Heritage supports the efforts of Haiti in strengthening its management capacity of the sites, of training as well as job creation and new opportunities for local communities, as well as revenue for the protection and restoration of monuments.

"This work session we allow us to discuss about the perspectives of Haitian government, of its plan and decide of actions to be undertaken together, of a precise specification for the enhancement of this great heritage treasure, unique, which is a trump card of a sustainable and profitable tourism strategy for the Haitian economy," she pointed out.

Mrs. Jean will have during her stay several interviews with members of the Cabinet to continue the dialogue initiated since the inauguration of the new government in October. She will also meet representatives of Haitian civil society and international organizations, including Chantal Moreno, of the International Organization of la Francophonie for the Caribbean States, to discuss projects dear to both organizations for culture and education.
