The former Spanish Ambassador Juan Fernández Trigo [2007-2011], was honored by the President Martelly for his contribution to democracy and institution-building in Haiti and decorated this Friday, Feb. 10, at the National Palace, in the presence of Ministers and other government officials and representatives of the Diplomatic Corps and Consular, including the current Spanish ambassador in Port-au-Prince, Manuel Hernández Ruigómez.

"The Order National Honor and Merit is awarded to the rank of Grand Cross, silver plate, to Mr. Trigo for his contribution to the strengthening of the cooperation between Haiti and Spain and his support to the struggle for the triumph of democratic values in the country," declared Head of State while giving him on behalf of the Haitian people insignias and parchment devoting this high distinction. "The Presidency wishes to thank all the work he has done for Haiti. Especially his work of defense of democracy and his contribution to institutional strengthening in Haiti."

"We note with gratitude that Spain is the third largest bilateral donor to Haiti and the first donor of the European Union. It is part of the G12, a group where the largest donors are represented. A total amount of $ 305 million was disbursed between 2010 and 2011 for cooperation projects," recalled the President Martelly who also stressed that the emergency response in Haiti deployed by Spain and Cooperation Agency, AECID, was the largest humanitarian operation deployed by this friendly country, with a total of 88 million dollars additional. The actions of the Spanish cooperation take place mainly in the departments of the Southeast (Jacmel), West (Port-au-Prince) and Centre. After the earthquake, these actions are also extended to the border with the Dominican Republic.

The Head of State is convinced that the solidarity that Spain has demonstrated toward Haitians, especially in a particularly difficult time, will not fade away in the memory of the Haitian people.

"It is with honor that the distinction is awarded to Ambassador Juan Fernández Trigo" declared Laurent Lamothe, the Haitian Minister of Foreign Affairs.

In his words of thanks, the Ambassador Juan Fernández Trigo, proud to receive this award, explained that such a ceremony is not often in the life of a diplomat. He said that the country has changed and that democracy has emerged with the victory of President Martelly in elections, adding that "the electoral crisis was a lesson for diplomats. [...] Mr. the President, it is you who have had the courage to step forward to introduce you before the Haitians, as someone who had the desire to work for the country. It's your candidacy that preserved democracy at the end. It is you who have shown generosity, to leave your quiet life, to get involved in an activity as complex as full of honor. Because it is an honor to serve the people, but it's even more important to serve with honor," declared Mr. Trigo.

Saluting the courage and determination of the Head of State, former Ambassador Trigo said he believed in the commitment of President Martelly to bring change and improvement of living conditions of the Haitian people. "I know you are a man of his word"
