Haiti - Agriculture : The dairy of Saut Mathurine is in operation
Initiated in 2011 by 8 peasant associations of the town of Camp Perrin, affiliated with the "Konbit pou Ranfòse Aksyon Lakay / Gathering for the Strengthening of Local Actions (KORAL)", with the support of Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development, this dairy project was funded to the tune of 4,230,095.75 gourdes (+/- USD$ 105,000)

The Minustah has cofinanced this initiative as part of its Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) to the tune of 3.960.095.75 gourdes (+/- USD$99,000), and the local organizations have provided an amount of 270,000.00 gourdes (+/- USD$6,700).

These funds have enabled the construction of the space that contains the dairy and the purchase of equipment, allowing among other things: pasteurization, sterilization, filtering and bottling of milk. With this equipment, the dairy of Saut Mathurine [second communal section of Camp Perrin], may also produce and package yogurt and cheese.

Although construction work has been completed in 2011, the project could not begin operations until February 29, due to the acquisition of technical know-how of its staff, essential to its operation. To this end, the company has given a training to his two technicians, to Veterimed, an NGO based in Port-au-Prince, specializing in the manufacture of dairy products.

In the opinion of the beneficiaries, the dairy will allow them to generate more revenue, thanks to the increase of cattle and access to a stable market for milk marketing. Jeannette Macésus, breeder cattle to Camp Perrin, welcomed the start of operations of the dairy, recalling that before she sold milk in the neighboring houses and to the market, unable to make any savings ""With the start of the dairy, I am confident that my situation is improving, because I will be able to sell milk to the dairy and expect a check at the end of each month."

A view shared by Ms. Nancy Cherry, Director of the dairy, who desired to have additional resources to be able to transport dairy products to the market, as well as a refrigeration system own to the dairy and a cistern to capture water to maximize the profitability of the dairy.
