Haiti - Economy : First Summit on the insurance industry
Yesterday Thursday, opened at the Karibe Convention Center [Juvénat, Pétion ville] the First Summit on the insurance industry in Haiti, organized by the company AIC [Alternative Insurance Company]. During two days, specialists and professionals from various backgrounds of insurance, will address, among others ; on the bill prepared by the technical services of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, aiming the regulation of this sector in Haiti and on ways to accelerate the strengthening of this industry, given its potential role as a tool of transformation in the country's sustainable development.

Mr. Karl Jean-Louis, Director General of Investment Facilitation Center (CFI) which opened the Summit declared "I greatly appreciate that the promoters of this event feed, in this Summit, the transparency of the private sector, as well as the landing of the objectives of progress and social and economic development promised by the government," noting that if the insurance culture was more widespread in Haiti, the losses recorded during the earthquake of January 2010, by ndividuals and companies, could be less. Recalling that "one of the priorities of the Government Martelly-Lamothe was to establish financial mechanisms geographically, culturally and financially accessible, to the greatest number.

Speaking at the first day of the Summit, Olivier Barreau, CEO of AIC stressed that the summit was an opportunity to offer to the entire insurance industry "[...] an exchange platform in all transparency about everything that relates to insurance

[...] I must tell you that since 10 years, we started our operations in the idea to transform the insurance industry so that it was able to play its true role of pillar of socio-economic development in Haiti. If people have no access to insurance, they will not be able to cope with the different shocks of the life and they will all decapitalised and poorer.

One way is to maximize the proximity of insurance services, through partnerships [...] increase the number of products we have, in order to meet the needs of all people [...] today, the AIC has 98.000 customers; 60.000 of these customers had no access to an insurance product before we came [...]

This summit is an opportunity to discuss important issues and see how our industry can have legislation that is not a hindrance, but rather serves to oversee and help our industry grow in regulated framework [...] and also better protect the customers..."
