Haiti - Diplomacy : Tribute of President Martelly to Kenneth Merten
In his intervention, during the farewell dinner given in honor of U.S. Ambassador accredited to Haiti Kenneth Merten, the Head of State delivered a fitting tribute to the American ambassador whose mandate expires.

"[...] This is not strictly speaking a farewell dinner, we rather salute the passage in our walls, of a friend of Haiti, the Ambassador Kenneth Merten on the occasion of his transfer to the Republic of Croatia.

Ken, as he likes to be named, was affected twice already in Haiti before becoming Ambassador. He began his career in Haiti as Vice-Consul, seduced by the cultural wealth of the country, he returned some years later as commercial Attaché and Economic, and then return as Ambassador since August 24, 2009.

The personal and professional commitment of Ken in Haiti, has culminated with the earthquake of January 12, 2010, where he has in a record time, alerted his superiors in Washington and convinced them to send a range of means to help. He was also 'instrumental' by granting Haitian non-residents in the United States, the Temporary Protected Status, TPS, and its renewal to date.

In short, his commitment to Haiti and too important and the time allotted too short, to speak of it significantly, we show him our friendship in addition to our eternal gratitude.

Always insightful and serene, Ambassador Merten has demonstrated his abilities of diplomat by excellence. In all activities, Ambassador Merten has never missed an opportunity to speak with the Haitian people in their native language (Creole). He traveled throughout the country, in every nook and cranny...

We wish Ambassador Merten great success in his new position in Croatia, and we know that he will return to Haiti anyway. When he comes back, we will receive him with all the hospitality we offer to our best friends..."
