Haiti - Politic : Haiti wants to deal on equal terms with its CARICOM partners
The President Michel Martelly, who participates in the 33rd Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Caribbean to Gros Islet (St Lucia) had yesterday, Thursday, July 5, 2012, several meetings with prominent members of CARICOM and of the economic and political environment of the zone around of issues related to the development of Haiti.

His meeting with José Miguel Insulza, the President of the Organization of American States (OAS), has focused inter alia on the progress already made by the Haitian Government to promote democracy in Haiti. The Head of State has mentioned in particular the installation of the Superior Council of Judicial Power (CSPJ), the appointment of members of the Court of Cassation, the facilitation of dialogue between all sectors of national life...

The President Martelly then had a working session in private with his Caribbean counterparts around the economic and geopolitical concerns of the region. Memorandum was signed between CARICOM and Haiti for institution building, the revival of agriculture and the investment facilitation. At this working session, the Head of State also presented its strategi objectives : the continuation of actions to improve the image of Haiti on the international stage and regional, the reconstruction or the refounding of the Nation, he continuous improvement of living conditions of the population and the creation of conditions of sustainable socioeconomic development of the country.

The Head of State, also had bilateral meetings with Antigua and Barbuda around several important points, including a joint art fair where will be developed of opportunities of exchanges of knowledge and professional executives in tourism and in creation of crafts. Haiti will take the opportunity to promote its culture and art. With the Bahamas, it is Wilson Laleau, the Haitian Minister of Commerce, who insisted for the Bahamian government lift the embargo preventing the opening of its market to Haitian products.

Haiti's position is clear : present the new climate of social and political stability prevailing in Haiti, and put the country in a position to deal on equal terms with its CARICOM partners.

Moreover, the President Martelly pleaded for Haiti hosts in 2015, the "Caribbean Festival of Arts' (CARIFESTA), a multisectoral cultural event, organized on a periodic basis by the countries of the Caribbean in a Member State. The CARIFESTA is both a music festival and an fair bringing together artists, musicians, authors and promoters of folklore and artistic products of the region. The latest edition of CARIFESTA was held in Guyana in 2008 with 25,000 spectators. The next will be held in Suriname in 2013.



The President of the Republic leaves the 33rd Summit, Friday, July 6th with the feeling that the discussions contribute to the improvement of socio-political and economic conditions of countries of the Region. Before returning to Haiti, the Head of State will travel to Panama where he must receive a prestigious award, that of "Grand Cross of the Order Gil Colunje" at the University of Panama City. This decoration demonstrates the commitment of the Head of State in the implementation of modern and effective strategies for the advancement of Haiti. The President will take the opportunity to discuss of possibilities of cooperation between the law schools of both country.
