Haiti - Diplomacy : The President Martelly decorated by the University of Panama City
After leaving the 3rd Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Caribbean to Gros Islet (St Lucia), the President Michel Martelly went Friday in Panama to receive a prestigious distinction, that of the "Great Cross of the Order Gil Colunje", one of the highest honors awarded to a foreigner in recognition of his commitment to the development and recovery of his country.

This distinction was awarded by the International Academic Unit of the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences of the University of Panama, to Panama City and sends a strong signal, which, according to the Haitian Head of State, reflects its efforts in 13-month term, to initiate "a new dynamic constructive, whose influence evokes sympathy and consideration of prestigious institutions of Nations friends."

Speaking on the platform of the University, the President Martelly declared "The Grand Cross of the Order Gil Colunje, invites me, like this National hero of Panama Gil Colunje, high-level intellectual and novelist, to grow with much more conviction, my dream regeneration of my country that I aspire to achieve." The Head of State, believes that this gesture of great consideration, magnifies the courage and resilience of the Haitian people, bruised and tested, but now standing and, more than ever, determined to forge a new future in the work and dignity.

The ceremony has also allowed Mr. Gilberto Boutin, Dean of the Faculty of Law and Political Science, and to other institutional authorities, whose Magister Gérardo Maloney, to make a long reminder of the role played by Haiti, through the history and independence of the countries of Latin America. This distinction for the Dean, is "a way of showing the gesture of patriotism and of recovery of the President Martelly to Haiti."

This exceptional distinction comes attract the attention and generate the interest of Panama and the world on the constant values of 'overtaking' and of accomplishment that we have in Haiti through our daily efforts.

The President Martelly took advantage of his presence in Panama, to visit the staff of the Embassy of Haiti and to highlight the efforts undertaken, to lay in Haiti, the foundations of true sustainable development.

Learn more about Gil Colunje :
Gil Colunje was born in September 1831. Writer, poet, journalist and politician Colombian living in the present Republic of Panama, he started the genre of the novel in Panama and was interested in the Romantic period. He is the author of the novel "Truth Triumphant." As a politician, he held various positions in public administration, including President of the Federal Government of Panama in 1865. He was also Judge of the Supreme Court, Foreign Minister of Colombia, Director General of Public Instruction, Dean of the College of Rosario, Director of the Bank of Bogota and Financial Officer of Colombia in Europe.
