Haiti - Health : Sophia Martelly calls for equity and to the respect of human rights
Sophia Martelly, the First Lady of Haiti, is in Washington to participate in the 19th International Conference against HIV-AIDS, which takes place at the Convention Center, from 22 to 27 July 2012. The participation of Mrs. Martelly to this conference contributes to encourage the efforts of scientists and health professionals from Haiti and many countries in order to meet the ambitions of the Organizing Committee.

Monday, July 23, Sophia Martelly stressed the importance of equitable treatment and the respect for the rights of infected persons and migrants in the Caribbean. She spoke in the presence of several representatives of countries of the Caribbean Region, Government members, including Mrs. Sarah Wescot-Williams, Prime Minister of St. Martin, Leslie Ramsammy, Minister of Agriculture of Guyana, Fenton Ferguson the former Prime Minister of Jamaica and operators working in the field both in Haiti and abroad.

"It is necessary to act, holding hands, through an effective and efficient partnership," launched the First Lady of Haiti, while stressing the importance of a regional strategic framework in the response to AIDS. In the presence of members of the Multisectoral Coordination Committee (CCM-Haiti) and other health professionals Haitians, she noted the significant efforts made by the Caribbean region, in the search for solutions. She also took the opportunity to focus attention on the many advances of Haiti in the prevention, care, and especially on the solidarity which must always characterize the approach of the partners.

While congratulating the United States to have opened their borders to people infected with HIV, Mrs Sophia Martelly, believes that "what brings us together, is greater than what divides us, gives us an unique wealth. We have everything to gain, by adopting a supportive approach..."

The interventions of other panelists focused on the isolation of patients, the rationalization of the international development agenda, building partnerships, looking for a multisectoral response, the integration, the decentralization...

The First Lady of Haiti, has renewed its commitment, on the occasion of this international meeting, to continue efforts towards the elimination of transmission of HIV from mother to child, and the awareness of the highest national and international bodies, on issues of equity and human rights in the treatment of this disease.
