It is also believed erroneously that it is an exotic practice, a folk heritage, a belief that has nothing of current, especially not in Montreal ! However, the Haitian community in Montreal has many practitioners, priests (houngans) and priestesses (mambos). If you listen some nights you can hear in some parts of Montreal the rhythm of drums and Creole songs. Voodoo is everywhere, say the adepts, and especially in Montreal ! 2 - "Les Derniers Pèlerins" of Will Prosper (46 min, Documentary, 2011, French, Canada) Every summer, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from around the world converge towards the sanctuaries of Notre-Dame-du-Cap and Ste-Anne-de-Beaupré. Among them, the Haitian community is well represented. But why so many Haitians in Montreal and New York undertake this long voyage ? Sunday, July 29 : NFB Cinema - 1564 St. Denis Street, Montreal (Interior) 3:00 p.m. Movies (Special Presentation - $10) "Une étrange cathédrale dans la graisse des ténèbres" of Charles Najman (France, 77 min, 2011, French, Creole, French with subtitles) featuring Frankétienne. "In the ruins of the Cathedral of Port-au-Prince, a white-bearded poet proclaims, between despair and rage, verses in Creole. Around him, men come to get something to rebuild their own homes, children play in the rubble... Powerful cry of anger, the film of Charles Najman seeks in the poetry of Frankétienne a way to report an unprecedented human catastrophe. Despite the pessimism of the wise, the incredible life impulse generated by a Haitian culture more alive than ever, and gathered around a great feast voodoo, remains a sign of hope."
