Haiti - Social : The Carnival of Flowers was a popular success 01/08/2012 10:55:32
Mayard Paul Gregory, Adviser of the Presidency declared "...what really impressed us, what has made us happy also is that the public has not only participated massively, but it took part calmly, with joy in the heart [...] usually there are a lot of violence [...] there has been an extraordinary attendance, ee this behavior of the population, it is a beautiful thing [...] of course, there are always little things to correct [...]" The provisional toll of these three days of Carnival is 3 dead, a hundred injured and 25 people arrested including two police officers. Mario Andresol, the Director General of National Police explained "We have arrested two police officers in civilian, yesterday, we were clear on the matter, the police officers who come in civilian to the Carnival with their weapons, we arrest them. We also had an incident on a stand, where a police officer, who handled a weapon with a VIP, took one shot in the foot [...] there is a set of incidents that have happened, but these are not great things, compared to the size of the Carnival [...] I am a perfectionist, so for me, there's always one more thing that can be made. It is true that we have made arrangements, it is true that there have been no too big problems, but I think we reached a stage now where we need to rethink the circuit of the Carnival..." Two people were killed on Monday night, one with a knife and the other due to blows to the head. A dancer was killed Sunday while six people were injured by gunfire during clashes between rival groups, reported yesterday Frantz Lerebours, Spokesperson of the National Police of Haiti (PNH) adding that a total , 24 people were injured Monday against 56 Sunday. Me Jean Renel Sénatus, the Government Commissioner, confirmed the arrest of 25 persons for various offenses. Most of those arrested were heard immediately on the Champs de Mars, where the prosecution assured a permanence on a stand, especially designed. 13 people were released and 12 placed in custody. Sophia Martelly the First Lady of Haiti explained that the Intervention Centre in intensive medical care, installed on the route of the Carnival of Flowers had fulfilled its role effectively "The first day we received 48 cases, 6 that we have evacuated to hospitals, the majority was what we called minor injuries [...] yesterday [Monday] we had 42 cases, we have evacuated 2 and today [Tuesday] we got a case rather complex [...] I think people have received the care they sought. I am satisfied, but I would be even happier if I had not had one [...] I did it because I think it is a necessity [...] and it will continue in the future..."
