Haiti - Economy : Economic benefits of Carnival of Flowers
Over one million people attended the carnival, with significant participation of the diaspora and foreigners, allowing to Haiti to reduce a portion of its budget deficit and replenish its income on many levels.
The downward trend of visitors to Haiti in recent months, caused by the psychosis of cholera and the poor image of the country, was reversed suddenly during Carnival of Flowers, with a flood of guests from everywhere, who have allowed significant economic benefits in various communities, of small and medium enterprises that create jobs.
The Ministry of Communications reported that all airlines have been full during this period of Carnival of Flowers, according to reports that it has obtained from the companies : American Airlines, Air Canada, Aero Caribbean, Air France, Air Caraïbes, Air Turks and Caicos, Copa Airlines, Cuiser Linhas Aereas, Delta Airlines, Florida Coastal Airlines, Insel Air, Omskavia Airlines, Sosoliso Airlines, Spirit Airlines et United Airlines, that regularly serving Haiti. Buses from the border, were also full of passengers, some of them continue to visit, today after the Carnival of Flowers, the sites of Port-Salut, Port-à-Piment, St Louis du Sud and Saut Mathurine.
The Ministry also found that 1.674 Hotel Rooms are still occupied in Port-au-Prince, and more than 763 requests for hotel rooms are booked. The estimates of economic analysts set the revenue generated for all sectors combined, around 35 million U.S. dollars redistributed at the level of various economic operators of private and public sectors.
On 10 days of booking before and after the Carnival of Flowers, it was recorded for example in a partial grid, more than 50,000 entries in Haiti whose the tickets sold at $500 is approximately 25 million. The hotel industry has generated a daily turnover estimated to U.S. $ 320.000. Sales of soft drinks, beer and food is estimated at 125.000 dollars and sales of handicrafts, costumes, masks, hats manufactured in the provinces and clothing of of circumstance is valued at 180,000 dollars, municipality fees and other income, have enabled a direct injection into the economy of nearly 35 million in a few days.
During the carnival period, the economic benefits, have benefited many sectors including handicrafts, transport, small businesses. It was a fruitful event for the Haitian economy. Carnival has provided employment among others, to timber merchants, carpenters, hotels and restaurants were filled, water vendors, of beer and of food have sold many products.
The Haitian state has paid the debts of 35 million gourdes accumulated by the Carnival of Les Cayes and invested 30 million gourdes for the Carnival of Flowers [just over U.S. $ 700,000] from the lines of budgetary subsidies, which are used to fund the implementation of rural feasts and of community recreation programs at the level of Finance, in the respect of the Budget Act. If we compare the investment compared to economic benefits, the Government can be satisfied.
In addition, the Ministry of Communications has facilitated the transmission of images of the Carnival of Flowers on several satellites, pictures taken by various websites that allowed users to experience live the atmosphere who reigned in the capital during these three days. Many television channels local and foreign on the stand of the Ministry of Communications (which hosted for free over 300 members of the press) were able to film and conduct interviews with disguised revelers, many dance schools, artistic institutions and groups of young acrobats hat paraded around of 14 troops from the capital.
During the Carnival the casualties were limited: three dead, including a cardiac arrest, a hundred injured and three rape cases the perpetrators have been jailed. This festival has helped to apprehend 8 escaped from prison. 25 people were arrested for various offenses, 12 were placed in custody.
Finally, the Ministry of Communication pays tribute to the Haitian press and to the 300 journalists who on the stand of the Ministry were able to cover the event with such class and professionalism on behalf of the freedom of expression.
