Haiti - Social : Thousands of Haitians in Brazil, in search of a better life...
The Jesuit Refugee Service in Latin America and the Caribbean (JRS/LAC) continues its campaign of awareness of Latin American citizens to the reception of Haitian immigrants and to the necessity to understand the reasons which led them to leave their country. For this purpose, the Jesuits made a video that shows a number of aspects of the dramatic reality that must confront those who arrived in Brazil in search of a better and more dignified life.

According to our information and a report of the Agency Adital, the emigration from Haiti has increased significantly since January 2010 "the French Guiana became the goal for many Haitians to enter then, either in France or the United States. Following the closure by France of its border with South America, the goal became Brazil, and especially the region of Tabatinga, a town located at the border with Colombia and Peru."

Based on an initial estimate of the JRS, on 6.000 Haitian migrants arrived in Brazil, 5,000 have passed through Tabatinga. There, the emigrants asked the police the permit to enter then they seek by all means to reach Manaus, economic center that offers more job opportunities.

The JRS indicates that in 2010, 456 Haitians are arrived in this city against 925 during the first seven months of 2011. In January 2012, there were 3.600 Haitians residing in Manaus. Since May 2012, the Haitians continue to arrive but more slowly, at a rate of five to ten per week.

Although many Haitian found work, not only in Manaus but also o Sao Paulo, in regions of Paraná, of Rio Grande do Sul, of Santa Catarina and Minas Gerais, the number of those unemployed is still high.

Currently, nearly 2,000 immigrants living in Manaus still need to regularize their situation.
