Haiti - Reconstruction : Drinking water and sanitation, ongoing work in Gonaives
The new Director General, Joseph Lionel Duvalsaint, [installed in May] of the National Directorate of Water Supply and Sanitation (DINEPA) announced having signed a contract with a company for the repair work on the pumping station located in the Gonaives in the zone of Châtelain. Remember that this station had been put out of function and vandalized earlier this year by unidentified individuals, causing a shortage of drinking water for the residents of several parts of Gonaives.

In parallel to these work, the Director General stated that studies were underway on the extension of distribution networks of drinking water in Gonaives and announced that in less than two years, the city should be completely supplied with drinking water.

Moreover, since late July and for the next two weeks, the Indonesian Military Engineering Contingent (INDOENGCOY) conducts development works and of profiling on 800 meters of main channel of drainage of rain and waste of Gonaives. This work aims to protect the city by the rapid flow of water in case of heavy rains, mainly in Ka-Soleil one of the most populous neighborhoods of the city. In addition to the canal expansion, the Indonesian will build a bridge and put two nozzles to facilitate drainage.

According to Osner Amisial, the Mayor of the city, who has sought the assistance of the Minustah to carry out this project, the profiling and the enlargement of the canal was of great necessity. "I can only rejoice, because ultimately, this problem is being resolved."

Deployed for over a year in the Artibonite, the 167 Indonesian military engineers have already proceeded to the cleaning and the extension of two other major canals in the downtown this year and also rehabilitated six road axes in the department, including to Ennery, Grande Salines, Dessalines, Saint-Marc and Gros-Morne.
