Haiti - ISAAC : The situation in Haiti this Saturday at 11 am 25/08/2012 06:48:17

It continues to move toward Cuba at 28km/h towards Northwest. Maximum winds currently blowing at 95km/h with gusts well above, and the area of influence is of 335km around its center. Rain, wind and thunderstorms associated with the passage of ISAAC are still expected across the country. The TPTC are clearing the main axes blocked by falling trees and alluvium, with the support of private companies. Many trees and tree branches fellin the metropolitan area. A billboard "Batimat" near the airport was heavily damaged by the wind. At the level of rivière grise, north of Port-au-Prince, the water current is very strong. The DPC informs that about 5,000 people were evacuated during the night in five departments (West, Nippes, Grand Anse, South and South-East). More than 3000 in West of Haiti. Communication is lost with the municipalities of Belle-Anse, Grand-Gosier, Anse-à-Pitre and Thiotte. Strong winds and rain are recorded in Bombardopolis, Baie-de-Henne and Môle Saint Nicolas. Roofs were also blown away.  At 8h00 am ISAAC is located at 19.7N 73.8W, or 66km west of Jean Rabel, 105km south-west of Cap-Haitien, 120km northwest of Gonaives, 133km north-west of Saint-Marc, and 200km north-west of Port-au-Prince, it continues to move toward Cuba at 22km/h towards Northwest. It always rains on the regiosn of South and Port-au-Prince this morning, CNM maintains its alert level red. Extensive damage are reported in the South. Electricity was cut to Jacmel. Many houses in Jacmel have lost their tin roofs. Jacmel and Cayes-Jacmel banana plantations destroyed. Boulevard La Saline is impracticable, the road is invaded by waste. In Thomazeau a girl of 10 years died following the collapse of a wall of his house. Several tree branches and plates are scattered over the entire length of the route des rails. The Plain of Arcahaie is flooded. A church burst into flames in Pernier 50, EDH cut power, and firefighters have been there. The PNH evacuated several people in Mariani, in Marassa 9, Station of Gonaives, Mgr Guilloux and to the Lycée A Isemery. The PNH informs that those who refused yesterday to leave the IDPs camps of Marassa 9 are now homeless after the wind had carried their tents. PNH is on site. The civil protection and the authorities have evacuated about 5,000 people during the night.  This morning ISAAC is located 19.0N 73.3W, or at the extreme west of the island of La Gonave, or 112km north-west of Port-au-Prince, 65 km west of Saint-Marc, 81km south-west of Gonaives, 94km south of Jean Rabel, 115km south-west of Port-de-Paix and 142km south southwest of Cap-Haïtien. The center of ISAAC is entered on Haiti this night at the level of Bainet and its center leave the zone South while passing 6km from Petit-Goave. ISAAC is moving at 22km/h to the north-west (Cuba), maximum winds are now of 95km/h with gusts well above, and the area of influence is of 370km around its center. "the whole country is under the condition of a storm," declared yesterday Ronald Semelfort, the Director of CNM. The HNC of Miami indicates that ISAAC should continue on this path for the next few days, with some increase in forward speed. The National Meteorological Centre (CNM) in Haiti indicates this morning "Heavy rains, winds and thunderstorms associated with the passage of this storm are expected across the country this morning and during the day." The SPGRD together with the SEMANAH still maintains the ban of maritime activities in all the southern coast, north of Haiti and the Gulf of Gonâve until further notice. Haiti should continue to be affected for again 24 to 48 hours.  Several neighborhood of Port-au-Prince have been without power, strong winds blew and heavy rains fell this night in the departments of the South and West. In Petit Goave thirty people were evacuated and housed at the Lycée Faustin Soulouque. The DPC asks the population to avoid leaving their home if their home is solid and is not located in a flood zone or away from tidal waves. The road of Bourdon is blocked with trees that have fallen, TPTC are at work to clear the floor. The DPC asks the population of Les Cayes to avoid moving and informs that the shelters are open and that they can receive 32,000 people, adding: "Heavy rain and strong winds on the south-east. Massive evacuation of the coast." A transformer in Tabarre (Innovation) burned in a flood, the EDH cut power and the fire was extinguished. A fishing boat sank in Fort Liberté. DPC and the Coast Guard rescued the five occupants. The National Police has evacuated 267 prisoners of Gonaives to Mirebalais, Port-au-Prince and St. Marc. Strong winds destroyed a house in Mombin-Crochu (Northeast). The family of 5 is hosted at City Hall.* 8.640 bottles of 1.5L BRANA, 100,000 bottles of drinking water 350ml Aquafine, 9.600 bottles of drinking water additional of 1.5L of BRANA are available for the population.
