Haiti - Education : «We are ready for the back to school is going very well» (dixit Laurent Lamothe)
Sunday at the National Palace on the eve of the new school year, the Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe spoke to everyone involved in the return to school to thank them and confirm them that the Government had made a lot of effort to make of this October 1, 2012, day D of back to school a success.

"[...] On behalf of the Government of Haiti, I would like to thank the entire school community, I would like to thank the parents of students who have made many efforts this year to send their children to school. I would like to thank the students also, a new year begins and you will have to study a lot, work hard, because with education you can get very far in life [...] the education of children is the most important program for the Government. I would like to thank the directors of schools, members of the ministries, the Directors General, ministers and all persons involved in the issue of the back to school.

Tomorrow [Monday] is a big day. The Government and our local and international partners have made all the arrangements so that the return goes well. We know that back to school is a time that is the most important for parents of children [...] We have taken all security arrangements, to ensure us that this back to school is going well. [...] We are ready for the back to school is going very well.

You know that the government has made many efforts, lot of investment so that back to school is done [...] the Universal Schooling Program, Free and Compulsory (PSUGO), tha the President launched year last, has been strengthened, and it represents an asset in the program against poverty. When you look at last year, there were approximately one million children in the program, which is historic for the Government, because the year before, there were no children who went to school for free [...] it is a superhuman effort that the Haitian government is obliged to do to be able to put all children in school.

This year, we made an extra effort of 19% and it is 1.2 million children who will take the way to school [...] and relieve parents. But this is only part of the program, we are working to be able to send, as the President said, all children in primary school for free, and we work on it every day [... ] I want to once again reaffirm the commitment of the Government of Haiti [...] to accompany parents, to continue the program initiated by President Michel Martelly, which will enable Haiti to achieve the Millennium Development Goals well before the year 2015.

We would like thank all our international and local partners, who accompany us, who walk with us, to make tomorrow a reality and ensure us, that children can find a good accompaniment.

University students, I reaffirm you the support that the President has promised you, this week we will begin with the registration of students, so that at the end of the month, you receive the subsidy that the President promised you.

The program of free education is for us a revolution, for the simple reason that the parents who have difficulties with three, four children, who have difficulty to send these children to school, and although the Government will take over one or two children for the moment, we will continue with the remaining later. Lot of effort, energy, resources must be made and we will continue to make efforts, to put ressources, to send the children of the people to school [...] Unfortunately, we can not send all children to school, we work to get there, as the President said, but for now, it's 1.2 million children that we can send to school.

All this shows that the government wants to accompany the more it is capable, parents and children, but also the schools. We are asking schools to take all their provisions, so that all schools who are in PSUGO, receive children, in good condition, and the state will make payments to schools that are identified. There are more than 10,000 schools in this program.

[...] The Government is mobilized, the entire society is mobilized for the new school year. Once again to all the local and international actors that have accompanied the Government, that have accompanied the parents of children [...] I say you thank you on behalf of Haitian Government. [...] I know there are other steps that we will be called to cross and we will require the solidarity of all, to make of this dream a reality, bringing education to the people of Haiti [...]"
