Haiti - Diaspora : Trade Mission of Miami-Dade
Jean Monestime, Miami-Dade Commissioner and Vice-Chair of the International Trade Consortium Board (ITC) will lead a business development mission in Haiti from October 21 to 24, 2012.

The Economic Development and International Trade unit of the Miami-Dade County Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources (RER) is organizing the mission with the support of the Consulate General of the Republic of Haiti in Miami, AmCham Haiti, and the Haitian American Chamber of Commerce of Florida. The objective of the mission is to further strengthen bilateral trade between Haiti and Miami-Dade and to provide business opportunities to local private sector participants joining the mission.

Haiti enjoys a free market economy and is Miami Dade County’s 25th trading partner with total bilateral trade of $1.2 billion (2011), US's 89th largest trading partner with $1.8 billion in 2011, an increase of nearly 13% from the previous year. Haiti is also a beneficiary of the Caribbean Basin Trade Partnership Act, which is a program of economic development and export diversification, and the Haitian Hemispheric Opportunity through Partnership Encouragement Act (HOPE I), which includes special trade rules that give preferential access to U.S. imports of Haitian apparel.

the objectives of the October mission "are to highlight the county's unique assets as an international trade hub, and to explore commercial and business opportunities for our private sector participants," indicated Mario E. Goderich, assistant director of the business affairs division of the Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources.

"Miami-Dade County has never taken a trade mission to Haiti before, and Haiti is an important trading partner for South Florida," said Mr. Monestime [the first Haitian-American elected to the commission].

In April, Carlos A. Gimenez, County Mayor and Mr. Monestime visited the capital of Port-au-Prince and met with senior Haitian government officials about strengthening commercial and economic ties between the island and the county. "Mayor Gimenez and I highlighted the important commercial relations between Miami-Dade County and Haiti during our April 2012 visit to Port-au-Prince," stressed Mr. Monestime. "The Sister Airport Agreement that we signed with the Port-au-Prince officials will expand our opportunities in that area." The sister airport agreement between Miami International Airport and Port-au-Prince Toussaint Louverture Airport aims to promote cargo and passenger traffic between the facilities, among other things.

"The mission to Haiti is designed to assist small business in Miami-Dade develop commercial opportunities in new markets," added Mario E. Goderich. During the mission, participants will meet with high-level government officials, receive in-country briefings, network with Haitian businesses, and participate in pre-arranged business-to-business match-making meetings with local companies.

"Haiti has put out a welcome mat for international commerce and investment, and I am excited about the wonderful commercial opportunities that exist there for our locally based businesses to grow their foreign trade activities and expand their operations," declared the Commissioner Monestime.
