Haiti - Politic : The East Timor donated $1 million to Haiti
Monday, November 12, the Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe met at the office of the Primature, with his counterpart from the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, Mr. Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao, in order to lay the foundation for cooperation between the two countries.

These exchanges fall within the framework of the efforts made by the Administration Martelly-Lamothe to attract new investment in Haiti. Following these discussions, the two Heads of Government are committed to identifying opportunities for effective bilateral cooperation, particularly in the areas of Agriculture and Culture.

A donation of one million U.S. dollars was given to the Haitian Government, by East Timor, to support the victims of the recent floods.

At the end of this meeting, at press conference the Prime Minister declared "[...] I would like to thank the Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of East Timor Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao made the trip to come and participate in the G7+ Ministerial Retreat [...]

Haiti established diplomatic relations with the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste. Last month we signed agreements, and we will have a non-resident Ambassador to Timor-Leste that will give us the reciprocity with the same gesture.

As part of G7 +, we have had many discussions, in which we compared the patterns of international aid [received by the two countries] it is a knowledge sharing [...] they have the United Nations also in their country [...] they have a population that depends mainly on the import of food, us too. And today, despite all the problems that developing countries have, including East Timor, you made two contributions to Haiti that touch us right to the heart.

The first contribution is after January 12, when Timor has contributed to the reconstruction effort to the tune of $500,000.

When the Prime Minister of Timor, arrived in Haiti [for the G7 +], he knew there was a lot of damage due to the passage of Sandy, and he decided to make a contribution of one million dollars to Haiti. We thank him for this contribution, which will certainly help us in the management post-Sandy, particularly in the North [...]"
