Haiti - Politic : First meetings of President Martelly in Brussels
Continuing his European tour, the President Martelly is arrived in Brussels (Belgium), where he has already had two meetings this Monday, the first with Herman Van Rompuy, President of the Council of the European Union (EU) and the second with José Manuel Barroso the President of the European Commission

Following this meeting, Mr. Herman Van Rompuy told the press "[...] This is the first visit of a Head of State of Haiti to the European Institutions. For years the EU has been a strong and reliable partner of Haiti, country to which we are bound by history, language and culture.

The Haitian government has done since its inception, has done considerable work that aims to make advance the reforms [...] They are there, bases essential to give a fresh impetus to the economic recovery and reconstruction of Haiti. I expressed to President Martelly our appreciation for this effort and encouragement to continue in this direction.

We also discussed with the President, of the need to ensure a stable political climate so that the cooperation of the EU and international can be implemented quickly and efficiently. This will require efforts from all political parties and institutions in Haiti to find the necessary political compromises.

It is in our opinion essential that all political actors act with a sense of responsibility, bearing in mind that the key challenge is to meet the expectations of the Haitian people, who still faces enormous challenges and precarious living conditions.

I expressed to the President Martelly the hope that the withdrawal in the medium term of the Minustah becomes an opportunity, to implement a strategy of reformf the entire security sector, to strengthen the Police of Haiti, but also, of systems of criminal justice, prisons and border control.

Finally I confirmed to the resident Martelly that the EU will remain fully committed alongside the government to ensure better living conditions and a better future for all the people of Haiti."

Thereafter, the President Martelly had a working meeting with José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission which declared in joint press conference "[...] I am pleased to note that under the leadership of President, this government has done considerable work aimed to make advance the reforms, improve the strategic planning capacity of government and ensure a resumption of the coordination of international aid [...]"

Taking the floor the President Martelly stressed "...I'm here essentially for two reasons, the first on behalf of the Haitian people, to say thank you, thank you for having always been with us [...] The second thing, is that I wanted to reassure you that the efforts you are making, you do not do them for nothing. There will always be problems, but the Haiti I led today, begins to change, Haiti rises from its ashes, Haiti is recovering..."
