Haiti - Politic : «Haiti is recovering, many challenges remain, but things are getting better» (Dixit Martelly) 19/11/2012 14:42:16 Ladies and gentlemen of the press, I took the initiative to visit the European Union, first to thank it for the tremendous work they do in Haiti, a considerable work, which allows me to say today, as President of the Republic, that is recovering, many challenges remain, but things are getting better, yes the reconstruction began in Haiti, thanks to your assistance. At first, it started through education, reconstruction through education it sounds funny... but for us, it was important to rebuild the Haitian Man, the Haitian soul in a system where the children were neglected, where 85% of schools were private, with an unemployment rate of 80%, the population had no access to education, to school. Today, 1,287,214 children go to school thanks to your supportand I would also say that it is thanks to your assistance that the EFACAP [Basic School and Center for Pedagogical Support] have been developed to train teachers, so that the level of education, is what it should be. To provide a response to the earthquake of January 2010, we were able in one 1/2 years, reducing the number of people living in tents, initially of 1.5 million people to less than 300,000 today, and this, again thanks to your assistance and that of other friendly countries. So, it was for me question to pass here, to tell you that the Haiti that you knew in the past, a Haiti that was itself abandoned, wakes up and takes charge. [...] Many challenges remain, but we get together and we organize, we identify emergencies, and of course we will have to intervens in the future on the new obligations. So, Mr. President, on behalf of the Haitian people, once again thank you. We talked as you said, of security issues, the vulnerability of Haiti, the rule of law, strengthening the rule of law, of elections, the establishment of institutions that have never been implemented, such as the Permanent Electoral Council and the Superior Council of the Judiciary, all that for a better governance. We continue to fight corruption, banditry and thank you to accompany us, we work hand in hand with the Ambassador in Haiti, the Ambassador of the European Union and things are progressing. Hope is in the heart of Haitian, Thanks again [...]" HL/ HaitiLibre
