Haiti - Politic : The President of the EC, stresses the importance of dialogue in Haiti
Monday, after his meeting in Brussels, with the President Martelly, José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission stressed the importance for all parties in Haiti, to work together to find a compromise and overcome the current political deadlock.

"We also discussed with the President Martelly to the need to ensure a stable political climate so that the European and international cooperation can be implemented faster and more efficiently. All parties concerned, political parties and Haitian institutions, will have to work together to find the necessary compromises to overcome the current obstacles.

The challenge is critical. This is a huge challenge that Haiti is facing as a country. It is therefore necessary that the various actors cooperate for the good of the country because it is first of all to meet the expectations of the Haitian people, who still face enormous difficulties and poor living conditions. We know that there has been significant progress, but the truth, as stated very clearly the President Martelly, is that there are still a lot of work to do.

I want to repeat once again that the European Union is a partner who has respected, and continues to keep its promises. I want to emphasize that the European Commission has committed 85% of promised donations in 2010, which represents 440 million euros. Of course, the needs and challenges are significant. But the willingness to face them is not less.

Our assistance, I hope, will continue in the new programming phase of the 11th European Development Fund, covering the years 2014-2020. Furthermore, I informed the President Martelly of negotiations that we are having now with all Member States to approve the Community budget for the next seven years and I said, how it is important that Europeans know that the contributions they give to the EU budget can save lives and are extremely appreciated in countries like Haiti, who benefit and sometimes humanitarian aid of the European Union can be the difference between life and death for many people around the world. And I think we must also have this in mind when the Heads of State and of Government, with the President of the European Council and myself, we will meet here in Brussels three days to see what will be the future of the EU budget. I want to tell you that the Commission will struggle for a budget of development aid and a budget of commitment of Europe with our partners, that is to the measure of our commitment, of our values and our relationships with our partners as the country represented here by the President Martelly.

We know that the reconstruction will take time. The development of the country is in the hands of Haitians themselves, but I wished to ensure solidarity and full support of the European Union in their efforts. I also promised to the President Martelly that we will work together in the coming weeks, to identify the priority areas on which the EU assistance should focus [...]

We will continue working with Haiti and I am sure, that we can contribute to restore the hope among Haitians for a better future."
