Haiti - Economy : Laurent Lamothe in Vietnam, talks business
Monday in Hanoi as part of his official visit from 16 to 19 December, to consolidate and strengthen the cooperative ties between the two countries, the Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe, met with his Vietnamese counterpart Mr. Nguyễn Tấn Dũng.

Nguyên Tân Dung took in high esteem the achievements obtained by Haiti in maintaining the political stability, the socioeconomic development, the expansion of external relations and the country's efforts to rebuild after the earthquake of 2010.

The Prime Minister Lamothe, briefed to his counterpart, the efforts of his Government to put Haiti on the world stage and attracting massive investments, essential to its development process. "In the context of relations between our two countries and the Government of Haiti, one of the major moto of Haiti is 'Haiti is open for business' we invite Vietnam to invest more in Haiti and to enter into a strategic partnership in the energy, infrastructure and agribusiness."

Laurent Lamothe, highlighted that Haiti offered opportunities for Vietnamese companies under a preferential agreement (HOPE Act) on the textile and assembly, and that Vietnamese companies could invest in product assembly and export them to the United States without tax.

Both parties wished to accelerate the establishment of mechanisms and legal frameworks favorable to bilateral cooperation, start negotiations on agreements on cooperation framework, the encouragement and protection of investment, the cooperation in food security, agricultural cooperation, cultural, sporting and tourist visa exemption for holders of diplomatic passports. The two leaders discussed measures to strengthen relations of cooperation in trade, telecommunications, agriculture, construction, science and technology, education, health, food security and poverty reduction.



The Prime Minister Lamothe says to grant priorities for future cooperation in agriculture, investment and culture, on the basis of mutual respect, solidarity, respect for the sovereignty of each country.

Outside the Army Telecommunications Group (Viettel), already installed on the territory of Haiti, Haiti would like to welcome Vietnamese investors in other sectors. Currently, Haiti has two areas of investment interesting for Vietnamese businesses: building infrastructure and energy. If both countries continue to cooperate in these areas, the value of bilateral trade could reach $400 million.

Vietnam considered as the largest producer and exporter of rice in the world, will help Haiti to strengthen its rice production. The Haitian Government, to combat speculation in the market, will also import rice from Vietnam who is willing to offer better rates to Haiti, until the national rice production in Haiti, reach a level sufficient to meet the needs of the population.

After the talks, the two leaders, who consider the joint venture NATCOM and the Government of Haiti, as a model of cooperation deserving to be expanded, attended the signing of a memorandum on the establishment of partnerships and strategic investment between the tArmy Telecommunications Group (Viettel) and the Haitian government. Viettel has also pledged to assist Haiti in distance education and other areas.

That same day, Laurent Lamothe went with the Haitian delegation to the Mausoleum of President Ho Chi Minh in Hanoi, which is the National Monument of Heroes and Martyrs in Hanoi for a laying ceremony of wreath. He was also received by the senior management of Viettel Group at headquartered in Hanoi, where Laurent Lamothe had a working meeting with Mr. Hoang Anh Xuan, Chairman and CEO of Viettel and visited the production plant of Viettel Group.
