Haiti - Elections : The Minustah getting impatient...
Mariano Fernández Amunátegui, the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the UN in Haiti, reiterates that the Minustah and the international community are ready to support the organization of free elections, inclusive and transparent in Haiti.

Mariano Fernández urges the Government of Haiti to take all necessary measures for the holding of partial legislative elections, municipal and local free, inclusive and transparent as soon as possible in 2013...

It is with satisfaction that the Special Representative noted, at the opening of the first ordinary session of the legislative year on 14 January, that the President of Haiti and the President of the National Assembly, are strongly committed to organize these elections this year "We hope that the three Powers of the State will work with assiduity in this direction."

Mr. Fernández emphasizes that the immediate task to accomplish is the establishment of the Electoral Council, noting that the agreement of 24 December 2012, between the Executive and the Parliament on the formation of a "College Transitional of Permanent Electoral Council" (CTCEP) represents an important first step towards the organization of elections. The next step is to finalize the appointment and installation of 9 members, so that the CTCEP, can do its job.

The Special Representative urges the key national institutions to establish this body without delay, insisting on the importance of the independence of CTCEP.
