Haiti - Health : Official launch of project water sanitation hygiene in Jacmel 16/03/2013 12:15:40 The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including the engineer Frantz Pierre, Director of the National Directorate of Water Supply and Sanitation (DINEPA), Jean Michel Sabbat, Technical Coordinator of Civil Protection,Hoche Lariveau, Deputy Director of the Departmental Directorate of Education, Southeast and principals and school children beneficiaries. This sanitation project implemented by Save the Children, of more than 2 million euro, funded by the European Commission, is part of the support of the European Union (EU) and aimed at achieving among others, the objectives of the Millennium Development Goals in the area of water and sanitation through the implementation of a program of urban sanitation broad and adaptable to other regions of the country. This project lasting three years, will affect approximately 14 public and private schools, both primary and secondary of the city of Jacmel and also some families in the community, or nearly 44,000 beneficiaries through various activities, of establishing of sanitation infrastructure, of hygiene promotion and enhancement of the local capacity in the field of sanitation. In his speech, Ronald François Project Manager to the Section infrastructures of the EU delegation in Haiti, stressed that the sanitation sector in Haiti was of great importance for the EU, particularly in the context post earthquake, which has resulted in the displacement of people across the country and the rapid urbanization, often uncontrolled, of certain vulnerable areas "The inclusion of this sector is also crucial in the fight against the cholera epidemic, which still continues to claim victims in Haitian families. The improvement of health coverage for the most vulnerable segments of the population of Jacmel, thus comes, through this program, support the objective of the eradication of this disease." In turn, Lisa Laumann, Director of Save the Children in Haiti, declared that this initiative intended to provide an major contribution to the development of the city of Jacmel, particularly on the sanitary plan and that this project was also part of a support to the Haitian government.
