Haiti - Politic : 7 «Political Champions» visited Jean-Baptiste
More than three years after the January 2010 earthquake, the "political champions" for resilience to major natural events make a two-day visit to Haiti as part of an appeal to the construction of a more resilient Haiti to these hazards.

Created in 2012 and composed of senior representatives of major national and international institutions (including CARICOM, UNDP, OCHA, the United Kingdom, USAID, the World Bank and the European Commission), the group of "political champions" for resilience to natural hazards, uses their collective political forces to raise awareness and mobilize resources for resilience in at-risk countries, including Haiti.

This very important visit to the country, comes at a very significant moment. The country is experiencing since last week the first rains of the year and the hurricane season is on the horizon. Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Mr. Jean-Louis de Brouwer of ECHO, praised the efforts of the project 16/6 to change the face of neighborhoods and offer to their residents better living conditions. He took the opportunity to highlight the positive steps that Haiti has taken over the past three years, while calling for more action to embed resilience into development investments.

Arrived Sunday in Haiti, the "Champions" went to Jean-Baptiste, Canapé-Vert neighborhood rehabilitated by the project 16/6 where many displaced by the earthquake have returned to live after spending several months on the Place Canapé Vert. There they was able to see a retaining wall project requested to the 16/6 project by the community during the community planning exercise. "We were there with the community in the minutes that followed the tragedy and the community has validated our presence in the community platform to plan, decide priorities in its name and support the players in the execution," clarified Borgella Gay, member of the platform of this neighborhood.

Haiti chosen as a pilot country where advocate in favor of a resilience to disasters, has more than ever need the international community, donors and organizations already on the ground to be able to be able to finally take the leadership in the coordination and integration of resilience in their political development.

The delegation of Champions is composed of : Ms. Helen Clark, UNDP Administrator; Ms. Justine Greening, UK Secretary of State for International Development; Ms. Valerie Amos, Under-Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator, OCHA; Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, Secretary-General of CARICOM; Ms. Elizabeth Hogan, Deputy Assistant Administrator from the Latin America and Caribbean Bureau for USAID; Ms. Rachel Kyte, Vice President for Sustainable Development, World Bank; and Mr. Jean Louis de Brouwer, Director of Operations of the European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO).
