Haiti - Agriculture : Workshop on cultivation and use of Moringa (Benzolive)
Tuesday at the Ministry of Health, Mrs. Sophia Martelly, the First Lady of Haiti, opened a workshop realized by the National Commission for the Fight against Hunger and Malnutrition, for the development of the National Programme for the Promotion of Culture and the use, in Haiti, of Moringa, commonly called "Benzolive" (Plant already present in the country).

The objective of this workshop is to produce, in conjunction with key stakeholders, a document that can serve as procedures, for the use and cultivation of "Benzolive" in the fight against the malnutrition and other environmental and economic issues.

Several personalities including: Dr. Florence Guillaume, the Minister of Health, Dr. Mimose Félix, Delegate Minister for promotion of the peasantry, Mrs. Rose Anne Auguste, Minister of State for Human Right and the fight against extreme poverty and Michel Chancy, Secretary of State for animal production, attended the launching ceremony of the workshop. It was an opportunity for different stakeholders, doctors, agronomists, representatives of farmers' movements and international experts to present through thematic interventions, different techniques and practices related to the use of Moringa.

For the Minister Guillaume, it is to intervene against malnutrition through programs that combat on the long term this scourge. The cultivation and use of "Benzolive" is for the Minister Delegate, responsible for the promotion of the peasantry "a major asset for the farmer, not only nutritionally and environmentally, but also economically." This plant makes it possible to generate farm income, develop activities of agro-processing and open new markets.

For Michel Chancy, a member organizer of the workshop, congratulated all government partners and Civil Society for their involvement in the development of this program pointing out that the culture of "Benzolive" is a wealth for the general population.

Sophia Martelly, amazed by the nutritional benefits and economic benefits of this culture, has assured the organizers of her support and that of the President of the Republic. She also calls for better use of our natural resources, emphasizing the fact that "This is not the case of only one citizen, a sector, or government, it is the affair of all !"
