Haiti - Social : Cry of alarm of prisoners of Petit-Goâve
Saturday, May 18, a team of journalists of Petit-Goâve have visited the custody cells of the police station of Petit-Goâve, transformed for more than 3 years in prison... The reporters found the conditions of detention intolerable and unacceptable. The cells are cramped and overcrowded. There is nothing : not comfort, beds, health services, maintenance and food and water are insufficient. In a single cell are stacked 70-80 prisoners who stand day and night. without the possibility of sleep. Many inmates became ill by contamination and others because of the unhealthy of cells, the lack of food or sleep.

Inmates launch a cry of alarm to the judicial authorities of the country so that they can help them. They denounce their poor living conditions and strongly criticize the judges instructions of Petit-Goâve and especially the Government Commissioner Mr. Alix Civil, according to them, is the main cause of prolonged pretrial detention "The commissioner is often absent of Prosecutor, he does not fulfill his duties and he never visited us to see our suffering, he passes his time at the DCPJ of Port-au-Prince [...] We demand his dismissal."

Some detainees have been incarcerated for two years without being brought before their judge "We demand justice and the rebuilding of the prison of Petit-Goâve [...] we can no longer, the heat is killing us [...] we're starving [...] it is impossible to sleep, there is no space where you can install even a single bed [...] we are in hell," explained some detainees of Petit-Goâve.

The Commissioner Daniel Compère, confesses his impotence before the critical state of the prison and declared it was up to the judges of instructions and the Government Commissioner to tackle prolonged pretrial detention. He wishes the quick construction of a new prison, which meets international standards, because the cells are saturated.

Recall that the U.S. government plans to build two new prisons in Haiti in Petit-Goâve (150 places) et in Cabaret (200 places). According to public documents, the project would cost between $5 and $10 million. Responses to tenders, were expected in early March. That the firm that will be responsible for rebuilding the prison of Petit-Goâve act quickly before it is too late... Because the situation is serious...

Last minute :
We learn that on Sunday, an inmate of the police station of Petit-Goâve, named Joseph Cerame was transported in critical condition in hospital Notre Dame of Petit-Goâve, where he unfortunately passed away, for lack of necessary care in prison.

Bigord Richardson, the hospital administrator, lamented the fact that the police brought too late prisoners in the hospital "we must not wait for the that prisoners are almost dead before brought theme o the hospital !"

For his part, the Commissioner Compère blames the judicial authorities, who have not visited the prison in time remembering that he can not without their authorization to transport the sick prisoners to hospital.
