Haiti - Economy : Results of the workshop on support for local production
Tuesday, as part of the support program to the Haitian local production of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MCI) and UNDP, have rendered during a workshop at the Hotel Montana, the results of consultations with local stakeholders on the identification and the systematization of typical local products.

Note that since October 2012, a process of dialogue and consultation was conducted by the MCI and UNDP through 11 forums in 10 departments. These forums were attended by 506 participants [producers, farmers, members of civil society and local Chambers of Commerce and senior government] to identify specific local products in each department.

Thanks to the experience of the participants, a list of 60 products was compiled on the 539 products initially identified. The products identified and validated by stakeholders are classified into three categories (natural and cultural heritage, local agriculture, small industry and handicrafts) and were selected using the following criteria: market demand, environmental impact, ability to increase the production skills of actors, potential of value chains, potential for job creation and diversification of potential derivatives.

During this workshop, a more specific selection was made by the participants to select and validate the most promising products. The support of the production of these local products will enable a rural development, and consequently an effective decentralization of the national economy. This selection will enable simultaneously the protection of natural and agricultural heritage, and the strengthening of the capacity of small production units to increase their productivity and competitiveness. A strategy that will support as well the policy of job creation and of local development set up by the Government Martelly-Lamothe.

"The identification of the flagship products of different regions of the country and the creation of wealth in Haiti today, go through the exploitation and consumption of existing products on the local level," said Mr. Wilson Laleau Minister (ad interim) of Trade and Industry, who welcomed the presence of entrepreneurs came from the most remote areas of the country, stating that "The MCI has already established two structures to channel the energies of entrepreneurs and producers. They are business support services, to support and strengthen SMEs, and of the installation of micro industrial parks in the departments of the country. MCI commits, among other things, to assist SMEs in the establishment of their business plan and facilitate them their search for capital."

Mrs. atyana Argueta, Director ai of UNDP in Haiti, declared "UNDP commits, in turn, to offer technical assistance to this program capable of generating thousands of jobs."

MCI will present, soon, a final report with the development prospects of models for an improvement of local production in Haiti.
