Haiti - Environment : Michaëlle Jean and Prince Albert II, will discuss the environment in Haiti 26/06/2013 10:30:38 Once enveloped by lush vegetation, the forest now covers only 2% of Haiti "Every rainy season, every storm, put national and local authorities, as well as all the people on alert," declared Madame Jean "They fear with reason, that the rains cause landslides or overflowing rivers that outweigh everything in their path including crops and lives." Several Haitian organizations working tirelessly, but with very limited resources, to reforest hills and valleys and to conserve soil. Seguin Foundation is one of those fierce guardians of the environment in Haiti. Serge Cantave Jr and Philippe Léon, the founders of this Haitian NGO, will accompany Ms. Jean in her meetings in the Principality of Monaco with Prince Albert II, who wanted to bring together members of the Environmental Foundation and officials of Foreign Relations and the Monegasque cooperation. Seguin Foundation will present several projects to deploy in La Visite National Park, the last vestige of a forest rich in species millennia and biodiversity. This 2,000 acre mountain site contains a unique fauna and flora, ancient pines and abundant waterfalls. "We must act quickly to protect the park located at 2,300 meters above sea level, which is the heart of the Biosphere Reserve La Selle, designated by UNESCO this year. We must do everything possible and urgently to prevent Haiti is completely denuded," said Michaëlle Jean "For this, we must not only save, replant, but also educate and involve the people who live on the edge and inside the park, so that they value this wonderful heritage and they feel part of the solutions. The training will encourage local authorities to use natural resources in a more responsible manner, taking into account the interdependence of humans and nature." UNESCO programs already support in other countries around the world facing the same problems, the creation of green schools working in the forestry, agriculture and various environmental activities. UNESCO is ready to do the same in Haiti with selected partners. Seguin Foundation also seeks to promote new cultivation practices, innovative agri-business and eco-tourism, to revitalize the economy of the region and ensure responsible and sustainable development. It proposes activities that will showcase the magnificent waterfalls and spectacular caves of La Visite Park, while protecting the integrity of the site and its environment. The issue of protection of the seabed will also be addressed with the Principality of Monaco, whose expertise in oceanographic is recognized internationally. In addition, the Special Envoy will participate on Thursday at the annual meeting of Honorary and Goodwill ambassadors of the UNESCO at the headquarters of the organization in Paris. It will report on its efforts and achievements in support of the Action Plan for National Recovery and Development of Haiti, prepared by the Government of Haiti following the January 2010 earthquake.
